have vacations always existed? do farmers take vacations? whatever their roots...i love vacation.
this month's rotation is general surgery, so we strategically placed 5 days of vacation right in the middle. it didn't hurt that valentines fell in the middle of the week either.
the original plan vaguely revolved around 'wicked'. however, 'wicked' is sold out in LA for months (we managed to get two random tickets in may, but that is a story for another time). anyway, we have lived in california for 7 months now (can you believe it?) and hadn't seen anything of brian, taryn, mckenna (sp?) and taylor. we decided a santa barbara vacation was a must--the beauty of santa barbara was only an afterthought :)

I must say something about our bike ride in the Santa Barbara mountains... it was a rough climb for me (which doesn't say a lot, I know)... but Paul had Michael and Abby in the trailer behind him, and Bekah strapped to him on the way up. On the way down Bekah and Abby traded places. I learned that this man will go to extreme measures to get his family on a bike ride. It was a nice ride (going downhill!).

speaking of vaca's, stevey left for cancun this morning. and given our current cold front ice-ing over all of manhattan, i can't think of a better escape.

My dream vacation seems to change every week or so. Last week it was going to New York, but after walking around in the cold there, I decided that can be my dream vaca for around april or may. So right now it is to get out of this freezing cold and spend a week on the beach with family. (vacas are always better with family). Of course, the best vacations include really good food, great outdoor activities, and a show or two (and some good shopping of course).
As for ideas for your next vacation, how about a family gathering in Utah? I miss everyone!

You mean a gathering in Utah at the end of April... around your graduation time??? Thanks to mom Frandsen's willingness to watch our kiddos, Paul and I are going to have another vaca in April just the two of us!! Trips with Paul are always fun. We're going to Havasupai for some hiking/camping/waterfalls/nature, and I'll spend a while in Utah when I pick up the kiddos. I'm excited for another getaway. It is fun to have things to look forward to (other than the fun-ness of everyday life, that is...).
Cancun sounds nice, even when you aren't in freezing cold weather! Hope you have fun, Stevie!

I've heard that a cruise is the only way to go. Never done it myself, but I think you can get pretty cheap reservations out of L.A. There is some website that has tickets that are basically on clearance (sell a day or two before disembarkment). It could be fun to see what comes up, and then do it... kind of a lower cost, draw it out of the hat vacation.
Matt... what's the website?? Paul gave me a coupon on my last birthday for a cruise (good coupon, huh?)... but he doesn't do the finances :) . After exploring vacation options AND the budget, we've been planning the Havasupai camping/hiking extravaganza... but if there is a super cheap way to still get on a cruise, it sounds nice! Especially if they take off out of LA!

Refugio is one of my favorite spots on earth....tar and all.

I know that Travelzoo has last minute deals. From L.A., you can take cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, and West Mexico which has some great places like Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta (sp?). You may be able to snag a 7-day cruise at the last minute for about $500 each. The good thing about them is that they are generally all-inclusive, so you know what you will be spending. I haven't done this myself, but I have looked into it a little. Costco can also get you some good deals on cruises. Oh, blessed, blessed Costco.
well, one time I got to go to go to Toronto, Canada for a vacation. It was pretty fun, and it's the only time I have left the country
beware of 'port fees'. i had a lady from carnival that i worked with on a cruise in april, but the bottom line prices were too much on line and didn't include port fees.
farcles: i'm trying to remember where i've been in canada. i know i've been to niagra (the falls you know) but we were only there for a day.

Paul: We went to British Columbia (Victoria) with the children's choir a LONG time ago. Remember those beautiful gardens?
beware of activities at the ports too! cruises are great, I highly recommend them, but make sure you budget for activities at each stop. unfortunately, they're not included in the ship's prices.

Farcles... our Niagara/Canada trip is one of the many great vacation memories I have with our fam. Lots of driving (as always) and good times. Is that the same trip that coined the cat's name Double-O-Dandruff??
Another vacation memory I thought of the other day was when we all had to drive home from a Florida vacation with wicked sunburns. No one was happy to be in close vacinity with anyone else. Good times.
How many long-cuts do you think our vehicles found in search of a short-cut?
Remember the time the "boy's room" played a trick on mom to think the hotel was going to bust her for having too many people in the room??
Matt, remember our special trip to visit grandma and grandpa together? We barely made our connecting flight!

early trips to gunnison with lots of four-wheeler rides, tricycle rides and pool trips. who would have thought of gunnison as a vacation destination?
remember the trip to california on the pier and dad told several random strangers on the street that they should stop smoking...
amy: we have pair of free tickets from ATA to go anywhere they fly. the tickets expire in june, so we've got to use them or lose them. we found that we can stay five days in honolulu right on waikiki beach with a rental car for pretty cheap. for the hotel and rental car it will be about $500. we're pretty excited.
Perhaps this can be your 1st anniversary trip... to make up for air mattress with the whole fam in your brother's house over Christmas break. The trip sounds really nice... especially since it is so familiar to you both, and you'll be able to visit friends.
Vacations? My memories are mostly of "rest" stops every 30 minutes for a son whose identity I won't reveal because I wouldn't want to embarrass Marc. Too bad we didn't know about astronaut diapers at the time. We could have gone 900 miles!

Do you get some strange looks with the kangaroo-pouch, followed up by the ricksha? I admire your ingenuity, but is it safe??
Cruise ships? Make sure you go with friends, or schedule your meals on off hours. You can get stuck at a table with some REALLY WEIRD people and some awkward conversation.
safety? the short answer is yes. i was always in control of the rickshaw. i would say that little kangaroo pouch on my chest is safer than a child standing in the main compartment of a grocery cart or sitting in a booster seat during a head on collision.
the views were great; the memories won't be lost anytime soon, and it was all more fun than grocery shopping or driving in the car as a family...
